MJ 0616 – As a going concern!

At times in my journey as a startup Entrepreneur, I felt lost and lonely. This is where mentors come in helpful; you need a lighthouse to show you the way through the end of the tunnel or simply some one to talk to or even just as a sounding board… You will always find your next step in the process of your interactions. What is not so easy about the learning is that it would comes in a simple method or even a profound metaphor that left you wanting of the required wisdom or cumulative experience to fully comprehend the hidden message with ease…

One of these profound messages is one that I got from my uncle many years ago and it has been lingering in my mind for the longest of time since. He said to me in one of those days that I was lost, “Doing business is like drawing a circle over and over again. Your task is to make sure that you keep drawing and cannot stop”. In that very moment, I felt like the young Luke Skywalker listening to Master Yoda for the very first time. My shallow comprehension at that given time was that I need to always keep my business alive so that it can be taken to another level when opportunity knocks…

Many years later today (coincidentally after the release of “The Force Awaken” where Luke Skywalker is no longer young), I see this metaphor differently… Firstly, there is no level up in business… It’s not about having a windfall but rather the assets accumulation in the process of doing business that creates values at the end of the day. From the hard assets in cash, property to the soft assets in reputation, goodwill and networking, entrepreneurs would have firstly enriched themselves and impacted the life of many who are part of their team before the indirect legacy to the greater public. The lines that formed the circle will be thicken over time as no one could ever follow exactly the very first line that form the circle over and over again. This is because as resourceful as the entrepreneur may be, there is never a smooth flowing of resources that ensure that a perfectly same circle can be drawn all the time…Slacks or improvements are all part of the process judged from various perspectives. This widening out lines of the evolving circle is what made the entrepreneur thick to protect the accumulated assets that were rightfully placed in the middle of the circle.

Another realization is that business is never about profit making but rather ensuring the flowing of capitals. The ink that enables you to keep drawing the line is the resources or capital that keep you going hence the phrase “business as a going concern”. These capitals are the variety of resources, the skills, the connections, the humility, the mindset, the profits, the harvests, the values and the adaptions that keep you afloat. Like life, you have to live for another day to enjoy the abundance of tomorrow.

Whatever it is, the best form of capital is that of the human relationship. There is no logic in it and never a zero sum game. Your investment into it would increase the irrationalities and such unpredictability would works one day in your favor… It’s like a “Joker” in the card games, you can turn it to whatever you want it to be. It’s a matter of how you play your card and that’s why they said “play your cards close to your chest” and chest is where your heart is…
